Kohl (Ithmid) is a very finely crushed stibnite (antimonide) that was used in Ancient Egypt to beautify the eyes. The Messenger of Allah mentioned its advantages, because it is not only used for visual beautification, but also repels flies due to its aseptic effect and thus helps against eye diseases, which are particularly common in North Africa.

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: “Kohl protects the health of the eyes, gives strength and clarity to the eyesight and cleanses the eyes from dirt. As an aside, some types of Kohl are also used for decorative purposes, and applying it before going to bed is even better. And Ithmid is more effective than other types of Kohl.”

Abdullah ibn Umar radiAllahu anhu narrated that the Messenger of Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “You should use Ithmid because it improves eyesight and makes eyelashes grow.”

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: “Ithmid is the best kind of Kohl that is used for the eye, especially for old people whose eyesight is weak.”

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: “Ithmid is the black Kohl stone…the Ithmid tends to be cold and dry, and it is beneficial to the eye as it strengthens it and also strengthens the optic nerve. Ithmid loosens excess flesh around boils and closes the wound while cleaning the surrounding area.”

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: “Ithmid also relieves headaches when mixed with pure, liquid honey. When ithmid is ground and mixed with tender fat and then used as a dressing over burns, it prevents blisters from occurring and also helps heal the skin damage that occurs in the event of fire burns.”

In several ahaadeeth it is narrated that the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam used kohl and ordered others to do it. For example, in the Musannaf of Ibn Abi Shaybah, it is narrated through the hadeeth of Anas that the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam used to apply the Kohl three times to his right eye and twice to his left eye.
[This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Albâni in al-Silsilah al-Sahîhah No. 633. And in Sunan al-Nasâ’i (5113) and Sunan Abi Dawud (3837)]

Ibn ‘Abbas radiAllahu anhu confirms that the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “The best cabbage is Ithmid (antimony) because it improves eyesight and makes hair grow.”

It is stated in al-Mughni: It is mustahabb to apply Kohl in odd number of layers.

And it was said of Zarqa’ al-Yamâmah, who could see for three days, that when she was killed it was discovered that all the veins of her eyes contained traces of that Ithmid.

Ibn Uthaymin رحمه الله said in a fatwa: “(…) Kohl is good for the eyes and not harmful, rather it is wholesome. But there might be some types of modern, manufactured cabbage that contain some chemical ingredients that are physical
can cause damage and destroy some of the Kohl’s virtues. So people today should look for pure Kohl and not consider every kind of Kohl available today to be wholesome. And Allah knows best.”
