The Sunnah mentions the virtues of Indian Costus, as in a narration from al-Bukhary رحمه الله in his Sahih: “You should use Indian incense, for in it one finds cure for seven diseases. One can use it as nose drops when one has problems in the throat or taken for pleurisy in the side of the mouth.”
Al-Tirmidhi رحمه الله narrates a Marfu’ hadith from Ibn ‘Abbas radiAllahu anhu: “The best thing to use for medical treatment is nose drops.”
Al-Bukhari رحمه الله named one of his chapters in his Sahih “Chapter on Using Nose Drops from Indian Costus.”
Abu Bakr ibn Arabi رحمه الله said: There are two types of costus: Indian costus (which is black) and sea costus (which is white). the jinn.”
Al-Hafiz ibn Hajar رحمه الله said to the words: “There is a cure in it for seven diseases.”
Ibn Hajar رحمه الله said: It may be that the seven refer to the various medical treatments of Costus as it is used as an ointment, as a drink, as a compress, as a hot compress, as an incense, as a nose drop or as a ludud (medicine, consumed at the corner of the mouth) is applied.”
Ibn Hajar رحمه الله wrote: “Mix the powder with olive oil so that they can reach the brain; and whatever disease is present should be dispelled by sneezing.”
(Fath al-Baari, Kitab al-Tibb)
Ibn Hajjar describes the dosage form lying on the back.
“Do not torment your children by squeezing their tonsils as a remedy for tonsillitis; you should use Costus instead.”
It is narrated in the Sahihain that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “Among the best of your remedies are the Hijamah and Quist Al-Bahri and do not torment your youngsters by squeezing (you uvula) to cure their tonsillitis.”
