How to use Ghassoul (Mineral Clay)

Ghassoul, also called Rhassoul, is a silky mineral clay from the Atlas Mountains. It cleans without foam, softens without harshness, and leaves skin and hair calm, clarified, and comfortable. The trick? Gentle ratios, short contact time, and a splash of hydration after.

We are preparing a short, step by step video guide showing how to use it

What is Ghassoul

Ghassoul is a volcanic, magnesium-rich clay that binds excess oil and surface debris while staying gentle on the skin barrier. It’s soap-free, fragrance-free, and naturally silky once hydrated, which is why traditional hammams love it.

How to choose good quality

  • Look for pure, sundried Ghassoul with no added fragrance or colour.
  • Prefer fine powder for face; flakes are fine for body and hair once soaked.
  • Choose dark, airtight packaging and a clear batch or harvest reference.
  • A fresh clay paste should smell clean and earthy, never musty.

Mixing ratios and tools

Use a non-metal bowl and spoon, as mineral clays can react with metal. Start small and mix fresh.

  • Face mask (one use): 20 g clay + 30–40 ml warm water. Rest 5 minutes to swell.
  • Hair wash (shoulder length): 60–80 g clay + 150–200 ml warm water.
  • Body paste: 50 g clay + 90–120 ml warm water.
  • For extra slip: swap part of the water for 15–30 ml rose water or aloe juice.

Tip: Aim for yoghurt-like consistency. If it looks thick and cracks, add a splash of water. If it runs, add a teaspoon of clay.

Face masks

  1. On clean, damp skin, spread a thin layer, avoiding eyes and lips.
  2. Leave 5–8 minutes. Mist with water if it starts drying; don’t let it fully dry and crack.
  3. Rinse with lukewarm water. Follow with hydrating toner and a few drops of oil.

Adjust for skin type:

  • Oily/combination: 2 short masks a week.
  • Normal: once a week.
  • Dry/sensitive: every 10–14 days; mix with 10 ml honey and keep to 3–5 minutes.

Hair and scalp wash

  1. Detangle dry hair. In the shower, wet hair thoroughly.
  2. Apply paste to scalp and lengths in sections. Massage gently for 1–2 minutes.
  3. Leave 3–5 minutes; don’t let it dry on the scalp.
  4. Rinse very well. Finish with a light conditioner on mid-lengths and ends.

Clarifying note: Ghassoul can lift heavy oils and styling build-up. If hair feels squeaky, follow with a quick acidic rinse (200 ml water + 5 ml apple cider vinegar), then condition.

Body polish and hammam-style wash

  1. After a warm shower or steam, apply a thin layer of paste to damp skin.
  2. Leave 2–3 minutes, then massage in circular motions.
  3. Rinse well. Finish with a light body oil to seal in moisture.

Using Ghassoul alongside Ruqyah

Prefer a simple, fragrance-free base during recitation? Prepare your clay with clean water, keep the focus on Qur’an, and use short, calm routines.

  1. Place your water in a clean bowl. Recite Al-Fatiha, Ayatul Kursi, and the last two surahs, blowing lightly towards the water.
  2. Mix 20 g clay with 35–40 ml of this water for a quick face or scalp cleanse.
  3. Rinse thoroughly. Do not ingest clay or the mixture.

Storage and shelf life

  • Keep the dry powder sealed, cool, and away from humidity; use within 24 months.
  • Use fresh paste. If needed, refrigerate leftovers for up to 48 hours and stir before use.
  • Discard if the paste smells off or changes colour.

Where to buy

Choose clean, finely milled Ghassoul from a trusted source. Explore the mineral clays at the SunnahCure store and look for clear labelling, fresh scent, and protective packaging.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Ghassoul and how does it work?

It’s a natural Moroccan clay rich in magnesium and silica. When hydrated, the clay platelets bind excess oil and debris, leaving skin and hair clean without stripping.

Is Ghassoul suitable for sensitive or dry skin?

Yes, if used briefly and kept moist. Mix with rose water or add 10 ml honey to 20 g clay, limit to 3–5 minutes, and follow with a moisturiser or face oil.

Does Ghassoul help with acne or congestion?

It can help remove excess sebum and impurities. Use 1–2 short masks weekly and avoid over-drying. Persistent acne needs clinician advice.

How much Ghassoul do I need for hair wash?

For shoulder-length hair use 60–80 g clay with 150–200 ml warm water. Adjust by hair density and length.

Can I mix it with rose water or hard tap water?

Yes. Rose water adds slip and a soft scent. If your tap water is very hard, use filtered water for a smoother paste.

How often should I use it on face and hair?

Face: once weekly for most, every 10–14 days if dry. Hair: every 1–2 weeks as a clarifying wash, with conditioner afterwards.

Will Ghassoul strip hair colour or keratin treatments?

It is a gentle cleanser, but any clarifying product can fade fresh dye. Patch test on a strand first and keep contact time short.

Why avoid metal bowls and spoons?

Mineral clays can interact with some metals, affecting texture. Use glass, wood, or silicone tools for consistency.

Can I drink Ghassoul or add it to ruqyah water?

No. Ghassoul is for external use only. Prepare clay with recited water for topical cleansing if you wish, but do not ingest.

How long does mixed paste last?

Fresh is best. Refrigerate for up to 48 hours, then discard. Dry powder keeps up to 24 months if sealed and dry.
