Who is Mr. Yoogi? -My meeting with a Sahir (magician)-.

What to Do When You Meet a Sāḥir (Black Magician)

What to Do When You Meet a Sāḥir (Black Magician)

Islamic guidance concerning magic, the unseen, and protection from those who deal with the Jinn is rooted in the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ warned against sorcery (siḥr) and those who practise it, calling the sāḥir a disbeliever. This article explores what a Muslim should do when encountering a magician, supported by authentic sources and practical ruqyah guidance.

A Real Encounter with a Magician

Message from a brother to us:

One day, I met a man who was probably from the Indian or Pakistani region. He greeted me with the Salam and introduced himself as “Mr Yoogi”. He wanted to give me his business card. Reflexively, I almost accepted it, but first asked about his occupation. He said he could read my aura, predict the future, read palms, interpret coffee grounds, create amulets and much more, all for free or whatever I wished to give, as long as it came “from the heart”.

I made it clear through my body language that I wasn’t interested and smiled inwardly that he had approached exactly the wrong person. I asked whether he was Muslim, and he said yes. Then I asked if it was permissible to work with Jinn or communicate with them, or how he carried out this activity. He replied that he worked with “good Jinn” to fight the “bad ones” and to help people. He added that he was accompanied by several good Jinn at all times and spoke to them.

He suddenly began telling things about me that no one could know, as though someone was whispering them to him. I realised then that he was a real sāḥir. I asked where the “good” Jinn were. He said, “They are here right now.” I recited aloud from the Qur’an on the spot and asked again if his “good” Jinn were still there. He tried to talk his way out, saying that they love to hear the Qur’an and were now “happy and content”, having left the room. Allāhu mustaʿān.

I asked where he had studied. He showed me a photo of a mosque in India where he said he was trained. I asked if all trainees there were Muslim, since I had met another “Mr Yoogi” before who was a Sikh. He explained that anyone can come, Muslims and Hindus learn together how to perform sihr! After this training, each graduate is called “Mr Yoogi”.

I asked how he controlled the “good” Jinn. He said that from sunset until sunrise he was busy with “worship” and “service”, then slept only four or five hours before spending the day “helping people”. I felt ashamed inside, this man was dedicated to satanic service from Maghrib to Fajr daily, while many Muslims sleep half the day. Allāhu mustaʿān.

I decided to give him daʿwah and told him that the Prophet ﷺ said every magician (sāḥir) is a disbeliever. Then I asked him to leave the shop. He took his business card, muttered strange words over it, and I immediately began reciting Qur’an aloud again. He quickly left, but threw the card towards me, which I later destroyed using ruqyah method.

Understanding the Sāḥir and Siḥr

In Islam, siḥr (magic or sorcery) is one of the major sins that lead to disbelief when practised. It involves seeking help from the Jinn and Shayāṭīn (devils), using incantations or rituals that contradict Tawḥīd. The sāḥir (magician) often claims to heal, bless, or protect, but in reality, such acts involve shirk, deception, and cooperation with evil forces.

Allah ﷻ mentions the origins of magic in the Qur’an when describing what was taught to people in Babylon:

وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَتَّىٰ يَقُولَا إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌ فَلَا تَكْفُرْ

“But they do not teach anyone unless they say, ‘We are a trial, so do not disbelieve.’”

(Surah al-Baqarah 2:102)

This verse shows that practising magic equals disbelief. Even learning it was warned against by the angels sent to test people. True healing and protection come only through faith and obedience to Allah ﷻ, never by invoking unseen forces.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Avoid the seven destructive sins.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, what are they?” He said, “Associating partners with Allah, sorcery, killing a soul unjustly, consuming usury, consuming the property of orphans, fleeing from the battlefield, and slandering chaste believing women.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2766; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 89)

Therefore, sihr is among the most destructive sins, not only harming individuals but corrupting faith itself.

Islamic Ruling on Black Magic

The scholars are unanimous that practising sihr expels a person from Islam if he knowingly seeks the help of Jinn and commits shirk. The evidence lies in the statement of Allah:

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمُوا لَمَنِ اشْتَرَاهُ مَا لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلَاقٍ

“And they certainly knew that whoever purchased it would not have any share in the Hereafter.”

(Surah al-Baqarah 2:102)

Thus, believing that sihr can independently benefit or harm is disbelief. The Prophet ﷺ warned clearly:

“Whoever goes to a fortune-teller or soothsayer and believes in what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2230)

This includes anyone who claims to communicate with Jinn, predict the future, or read unseen realities. The believer must reject them, avoid their company, and seek refuge in Allah ﷻ through Qur’an and duʿāʾ.

Qur’anic Guidance for Protection

Allah ﷻ has given Muslims clear protection through His words. Reciting certain passages daily forms a spiritual shield stronger than any talisman. Among the most powerful are:

اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ

“Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence.”

(Āyat al-Kursī — Surah al-Baqarah 2:255)

“Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak.’”

(Surah al-Falaq 113:1)

“Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.’”

(Surah an-Nās 114:1)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Recite Surah al-Baqarah in your houses, for the Shayṭān does not enter the house where Surah al-Baqarah is recited.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 780)

Regular recitation of these verses, together with daily remembrance and prayer, keeps a believer spiritually fortified.

Tip from SunnahCure: How to Destroy Sihr

If you find any object, paper, or amulet suspected to contain sihr, do not panic, handle it calmly and according to the Sunnah. The goal is not curiosity, but neutralisation through Qur’an and lawful ruqyah.

You will need:

  • (Disposable) gloves
  • A clean container
  • Ruqyah water
  • A lighter or matches

Step 1: Prepare ruqyah water. You can use SunnahCure’s printed Āyāt against Sihr sheets or read the verses yourself. At minimum, recite the following verses over clean water while focusing sincerely on Allah’s protection.

Ruqyah Verses to Read (7 times each)

So Moses threw his staff, and at once it devoured what they were falsifying.

(Surah al-Aʿrāf 7:117 — Sahih International)

And the truth was established, and what they were doing became worthless. So they were overcome there and became debased. And the magicians fell down in prostration. They said, “We have believed in the Lord of the worlds, the Lord of Moses and Aaron.”

(Surah al-Aʿrāf 7:118–122)

Moses said, “What you have brought is [only] magic. Indeed, Allah will expose its worthlessness. Indeed, Allah does not amend the work of corrupters. And Allah will establish the truth by His words, even if the criminals dislike it.”

(Surah Yūnus 10:81–82)

We said, “Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior. And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is.”

(Surah Ṭā Hā 20:68–69)

Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, from the evil of that which He created, and from the evil of darkness when it settles, and from the evil of the blowers in knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies.”

(Surah al-Falaq 113 — Sahih International)

Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws — who whispers in the breasts of mankind — among jinn and among mankind.”

(Surah an-Nās 114)

Step 2: Place the sihr item in the ruqyah water for 20–30 minutes while continuing to recite or play these verses. Ensure you are wearing gloves and remain in remembrance of Allah.

Step 3: Remove the object, allow it to dry, and then burn it while reciting al-Falaq and an-Nās. If burning is impossible, shred or cut it thoroughly, then dispose of it in household rubbish (which is later incinerated). Avoid flushing or discarding in rivers.

Step 4: After destroying the sihr, perform two rakʿahs of prayer, thanking Allah for His protection, and make duʿāʾ that He guard your home from harm. Maintain regular recitation of Surah al-Baqarah and daily adhkār thereafter.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is sihr?

Sihr is the Arabic term for magic or sorcery. It involves seeking aid from Jinn or Shayāṭīn to cause harm, influence, or deception. The Prophet ﷺ listed sihr among the seven destructive sins. (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2766)

Can a Muslim be a magician?

No. A Muslim cannot remain within Islam while practising magic. Allah says that whoever learns or uses it “has no share in the Hereafter.” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:102) The act involves disbelief because it depends on invoking Jinn and committing shirk.

How to recognise a sāḥir?

A sāḥir often claims supernatural powers such as predicting the future, communicating with unseen beings, or healing through secret rituals. They may use unknown languages, talismans, or ask for a mother’s name—clear signs of sihr and shirk. The Prophet ﷺ forbade visiting or believing such people. (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2230)

Is all magic shirk?

Yes, if it involves seeking assistance from Jinn or opposing Allah’s commands. Scholars distinguish between illusionary tricks and sihr, but all true sorcery requiring Jinn is shirk. The magician depends on other than Allah for control or harm.

How to seek protection from sihr?

Recite Surah al-Baqarah, Āyat al-Kursī, and the Muʿawwidhatayn (Surah al-Falaq and an-Nās) daily. The Prophet ﷺ said these verses safeguard the believer. Keep the home pure from idols, images, and music, and maintain regular prayer and dhikr.

What is ruqyah?

Ruqyah refers to spiritual healing through Qur’an and authentic duʿāʾ. It involves reciting verses seeking Allah’s protection against harm. The Prophet ﷺ said: “There is no ruqyah except for the evil eye or fever.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2200)

How to perform ruqyah at home?

Recite Qur’anic verses over yourself or water while focusing on Allah’s power, not the recitation itself. Blow gently into your hands after reading al-Fātiḥah, Āyat al-Kursī, al-Ikhlāṣ, al-Falaq, and an-Nās, then wipe over your body. Perform daily with sincerity and tawakkul.

Are all Jinn evil?

No. Allah mentions both believing and disbelieving Jinn. The evil ones (Shayāṭīn) mislead humans, while the believing Jinn follow the prophets. However, Muslims must not attempt contact with any Jinn, as doing so often leads to deception or harm. (Surah al-Jinn 72:11–14)

What if someone offers to remove magic using Jinn?

Reject them immediately. Even if they claim to use “good” Jinn, this is prohibited. True healing lies in Qur’an and duʿāʾ. Ibn Bāz رحمه الله said: “It is not permissible to seek aid from Jinn, even if they appear righteous.” (Fatāwā Ibn Bāz, vol. 3, p. 277)

What to do after destroying sihr?

Continue performing ruqyah for several days, maintain daily adhkār, and renew your faith with acts of worship. Keep away from sin and doubtful company. Remember that lasting protection comes only from consistent obedience to Allah and regular remembrance.
