How to Get Rid of Jinn (According to the Qur’an and Sunnah)
Encounters with the unseen can be unsettling. For some, it begins with strange whispers, sleepless nights, or unexplained fear. Islam recognises the existence of Jinn, yet it also provides complete guidance on protection and healing. The key is not superstition but understanding and faith grounded in the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Understanding Jinn and Their Nature
The Jinn are a creation of Allah, made from smokeless fire. They live unseen among us, possess intellect, and have free will. Some are believers, others are disbelievers. Allah says:
“And He created the Jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.”
(Surah ar-Rahman 55:15)
Because they inhabit a world beyond our perception, humans cannot normally see them. Yet they can see us, as Allah tells us:
إِنَّهُ يَرَاكُمْ هُوَ وَقَبِيلُهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا تَرَوْنَهُمْ
“Surely he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them.”
(Surah al-A‘rāf 7:27)
This unseen nature makes their influence subtle yet potentially harmful. The Prophet ﷺ warned of their whispering and encouraged constant remembrance of Allah as protection.
Why Jinn May Harm Humans
According to the scholars, Jinn may harm humans for several reasons. Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله explained that sometimes harm arises from anger, revenge, or even unintentional injury caused by humans without knowing. He said, “When humans harm them, pour hot water, or kill one of them without intending, the Jinn may retaliate unjustly.” (Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā 19/40)
They may also enter a person out of desire or to mislead them spiritually. Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله described possession as real and affirmed that Qur’anic recitation and repentance are its strongest cures. (Zād al-Maʿād 3/81)
But it’s vital to remember that no Jinn can harm without Allah’s permission. Protection lies not in charms or amulets but in firm tawḥīd and remembrance.
Qur’anic Guidance for Protection
Allah ﷻ has revealed powerful verses that protect from Jinn and Shayṭān. These verses are known collectively as *āyāt al-ḥifẓ* — verses of protection.
The most powerful among them is Āyat al-Kursī:
“Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him... His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not tire Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
(Surah al-Baqarah 2:255)
Reciting it before sleeping protects one from Shayṭān until morning. Likewise, the last two verses of al-Baqarah and the two Muʿawwidhatayn (Surahs al-Falaq and an-Nās) are prescribed daily.
Allah ﷻ says:
(Surah al-Falaq 113:1-5)
(Surah an-Nās 114:1-6)
The Prophet ﷺ would recite these every night, blow into his palms, and wipe his body three times. (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5017)
Prophetic Teachings on Ruqyah
The Prophet ﷺ himself performed *ruqyah* (recitation for healing) and taught companions to use the Qur’an as a shield against Jinn and harm. Genuine ruqyah relies on clear remembrance, not superstition.
“There is nothing wrong with ruqyah as long as it contains no shirk.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2200)
When a companion recited Surah al-Fātiḥah over a man stung by a scorpion, he was healed. The Prophet ﷺ approved and said, “How did you know it was a ruqyah?” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5736)
This shows that sincere recitation, grounded in faith, carries real spiritual power. Ruqyah is not about magical formulae but Qur’anic truth recited with conviction and tawakkul (reliance upon Allah).
Steps to Remove Jinn Influence
When dealing with possible possession or disturbance, Islam provides a structured and calm method rooted in faith:
- 1 – Repent sincerely: Renew tawḥīd and abandon sins. Jinn exploit weakness through disobedience.
- 2 – Regular recitation: Read Āyat al-Kursī, the last two verses of al-Baqarah, and the Muʿawwidhatayn morning and evening.
- 3 – Ruqyah session: Recite al-Fātiḥah, Āyat al-Kursī, al-Baqarah verses 102 and 163-164, and al-Ikhlāṣ, al-Falaq, an-Nās over oneself or the afflicted person.
- 4 – Avoid amulets and innovations: Protective items not based on the Sunnah can open doors to Shirk.
- 5 – Stay in a state of wuḍū’: The Prophet ﷺ said, “Purity is half of faith.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 223) It weakens the Jinn’s influence.
- 6 – Use adhan and dhikr: Call the adhan if something strange occurs in a home; Shayṭān flees when he hears it.
- 7 – Seek knowledgeable help if needed: From reliable scholars or those trained in authentic ruqyah, avoiding those who use unknown chants or spirits.
Ibn Bāz رحمه الله emphasised that healing comes from Qur’an recitation and trust in Allah, not through fortune-telling or charms. (Fatāwā Ibn Bāz vol. 3 p. 277)
Insights from the Scholars
Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله affirmed that possession by Jinn is real but curable through recitation and patience. He said, “The recitation of the Qur’an upon the possessed burns the Jinn like fire, especially when done with strong faith.” (Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā 19/12)
Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله wrote that Surah al-Baqarah is a fortress against Shayṭān: “The house in which al-Baqarah is recited will not be entered by Shayṭān.” (Zād al-Maʿād 3/82) He also described how recitation purifies the heart and repels whispering.
These classical views remind us that true protection lies in connection to Allah and His Book, not in fear or ritual alone.
Spiritual Prevention and Daily Protection
Prevention is better than cure. Regular adhkār (daily remembrances) build a spiritual shield stronger than any talisman.
- Recite morning and evening adhkār from the Sunnah.
- Say Bismillāh before entering homes, eating, and drinking.
- Keep homes free from images and music that invite Shayṭān.
- Maintain prayers on time and strengthen the bond with the Qur’an.
- Give regular charity – it breaks Shayṭān’s grip of greed and fear.
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Recite Surah al-Baqarah in your houses, for Shayṭān does not enter a house where it is recited.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 780) Regular worship is thus the strongest barrier against Jinn influence.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How to get rid of Jinn permanently according to Islam?
The only permanent way to get rid of Jinn is through firm belief in Allah, consistent remembrance, and reciting the Qur’an daily. Reciting Surah al-Baqarah, Āyat al-Kursī, and the Muʿawwidhatayn protects a believer completely. Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said, “Nothing repels Shayṭān like the remembrance of Allah.” (Zād al-Maʿād 3/82)
How to get rid of Jinn from the body?
Perform authentic ruqyah by reciting al-Fātiḥah, Āyat al-Kursī, and Surah al-Ikhlāṣ, al-Falaq, and an-Nās over yourself. Blow gently into your hands and wipe your body. Repeat morning and evening with full concentration. Avoid any so-called healers who use unknown chants or contact spirits.
How to get rid of Jinn in the house?
Recite Surah al-Baqarah in your home; the Prophet ﷺ said, “The house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited, Shayṭān does not enter.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 780) Keep your house pure, remove images or idols, and say Bismillāh when entering. Maintain regular prayers and adhkār.
How to get rid of Jinn through ruqyah?
Use Qur’anic ruqyah only—no charms or innovations. Recite verses of protection with sincerity and reliance upon Allah. Ruqyah sessions should include Surah al-Fātiḥah, Āyat al-Kursī, al-Baqarah 2:102, 163–164, and the final three surahs. Consistency and faith are essential.
How to get rid of Jinn disturbances during sleep?
Recite Āyat al-Kursī and the Muʿawwidhatayn before sleeping, blow into your palms, and wipe your body three times. Keep your wuḍū’ before bed and mention Allah’s name. The Prophet ﷺ taught that whoever recites Āyat al-Kursī before sleeping will be protected until morning. (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2311)
How to get rid of Jinn after black magic (sihr)?
Read Surah al-Baqarah regularly, especially verse 102. Seek refuge in Allah and avoid magicians or amulets. True healing is through Qur’an, dua, and repentance. Ibn Bāz رحمه الله said, “Ruqyah is the lawful cure for sihr, by reciting Qur’an and authentic supplications.” (Fatāwā Ibn Bāz vol. 3 p. 277)
How to get rid of Jinn from children?
Parents should recite Surah al-Ikhlāṣ, al-Falaq, and an-Nās for their children before bed. The Prophet ﷺ would seek protection for al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn with these surahs. Keep children’s rooms filled with remembrance and free from fear-based talk about Jinn.
How to get rid of Jinn with dua?
Make dua with conviction. Say: “Aʿūdhu bi kalimātillāhi t-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq.” (“I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created.”) (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2708) Repeating this morning, evening, and before sleeping strengthens protection.
How to get rid of Jinn using the Qur’an?
Recite specific chapters of the Qur’an daily: al-Baqarah, al-Ikhlāṣ, al-Falaq, and an-Nās. Listening to al-Baqarah frequently purifies the home. Reflect upon the meanings; the Qur’an heals both body and soul. Allah says:
“We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers.” (Surah al-Isrā 17:82)
How to get rid of Jinn permanently from one’s life?
Maintain steadfast faith, perform the five daily prayers, and keep your tongue moist with remembrance. Abandon sin, especially music, images, and neglect of prayer. The Jinn flee from a heart filled with the remembrance of Allah. True freedom from them is found in obedience and constant dhikr.
