Qur’ānic Foundation for Protection
The Qur’an repeatedly reminds believers that protection lies not in amulets or superstition, but in steadfast faith and remembrance of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Do not turn your houses into graves. Verily, Shayṭān does not enter the house in which Sūrat al-Baqarah is recited.” (Sahih Muslim 780)
Allah commands in the Qur’an to seek refuge in Him alone:
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِSay, “I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak.” (Surah al-Falaq, 113:1)
Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.” (Surah an-Nās, 114:1)
Imām Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله wrote in Zād al-Ma‘ād that these two sūrahs (al-Falaq and an-Nās) are the greatest forms of ruqyah (spiritual healing) against envy, magic, and jinn possession. The Prophet ﷺ himself used them nightly to seek Allah’s protection, blowing into his palms and wiping over his body.
1. Pray Regularly and Recite Āyat al-Kursī After Each Prayer
The first line of defence is consistency in ṣalāh. Shayṭān flees from the remembrance of Allah, and the regular prayer strengthens the heart against whisperings and harm. After every obligatory prayer, the Prophet ﷺ instructed the recitation of Āyat al-Kursī, a verse so immense that it describes the very throne and majesty of Allah.
Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. (Al-Baqarah, 2:255)
Abū Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever recites Āyat al-Kursī after every obligatory prayer, nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except death.” (Sahih al-Jami 6464 - Authenticated by al-Albānī)
Imām Ibn Kathīr commented that this verse is “the greatest in the Qur’an” and that regular recitation protects the believer from every kind of harm, by Allah’s permission.
2. Morning and Evening Adhkār
Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) forms an invisible shield around the believer. Reciting the morning and evening adhkār, as compiled in Hisn al-Muslim, ensures divine protection until the next cycle.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever says, in the morning and evening, ‘In the name of Allah with whose name nothing in the heavens or earth can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing,’ nothing will harm him.” (Sunan Abī Dawud 5088)
This habit connects the believer’s heart to Allah’s remembrance continuously, reducing the influence of Shayṭān’s whispers. Ibn al-Qayyim wrote that when the tongue remains moist with dhikr, the Shayṭān finds no resting place in the heart.
3. Morning Dhikr: 100× Lā Ilāha Illā Allāh...
Among the Prophet’s ﷺ most recommended adhkār is the daily proclamation of Allah’s oneness. After Fajr, repeat one hundred times:
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌThere is no deity except Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs the dominion, to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things.
In an authentic hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever says this one hundred times in a day will have the reward of freeing ten slaves, a hundred good deeds written for him, a hundred sins erased, and it will be a protection for him from Shayṭān that day until evening.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3293, Sahih Muslim 2691)
This dhikr not only earns immense reward but also strengthens the believer’s fortress of protection from jinn and sihr throughout the day.
4. Eat Seven Dates Each Morning
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever eats seven dates of ‘Ajwah in the morning, neither poison nor magic will harm him that day.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5768, Sahih Muslim 2047)
Imām al-Nawawī explained that this hadith refers specifically to the blessed ‘Ajwah dates of Madīnah but that other types of dates also carry blessings and benefit. Ibn Ḥajar noted that the physical nutrients of dates, combined with the barakah mentioned in hadith, create both physical and spiritual protection. The number seven symbolises completeness in divine decree.
In practice, eat seven dates each morning before breakfast, even better if they are ‘Ajwah. Many scholars recommend this especially for those undergoing ruqyah or suffering from sihr-related symptoms.
5. Recite Sūrat al-Baqarah Every Three Days
Among the most potent protections from sihr and jinn is regular recitation of Sūrat al-Baqarah. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Recite Sūrat al-Baqarah, for taking it is a blessing and abandoning it is a cause of regret, and the magicians cannot confront it.” (Sahih Muslim 804)
Imām Ibn Kathīr wrote in his tafsīr that “the devils flee from the house in which al-Baqarah is recited,” because the sūrah contains the greatest āyah in the Qur’an - Āyat al-Kursī - and powerful reminders of Allah’s sovereignty, angels, and divine decree.
A practical Sunnah routine is to divide the sūrah into three parts and complete it over three days, maintaining this cycle regularly. This ensures the home remains under constant Qur’ānic protection. Some scholars, such as Shaykh al-Albānī, affirmed that even listening to al-Baqarah with concentration has an effect by Allah’s permission.
6. Begin and End Every Act with the Sunnah Duʿāʾ
Every act in Islam can be transformed into worship by beginning it with the remembrance of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ taught that blessing (*barakah*) lies in invoking Allah’s Name before starting any matter of importance. He said:
“Every important matter that does not begin with ‘Bismillāh’ is cut off (from blessing).”
Reported by al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī and others; graded ḥasan li-ghayrih by al-ʿIrāqī and accepted in meaning by al-Nawawī and Ibn Ḥajar.
Although the individual chains are weak, the meaning is supported by authentic ḥadīths where the Prophet ﷺ instructed the believers to say “Bismillāh” before eating, performing wudūʾ, marital relations, or entering the home. Scholars such as Imām al-Nawawī and Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī agreed that beginning with the Name of Allah brings blessing to every righteous act.
Reciting “Bismillāh” before eating, dressing, entering the toilet, or engaging in marital relations serves as a spiritual boundary that prevents the jinn from participating or harming. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Cover your vessels, close your doors, and mention the name of Allah, for Shayṭān does not open a closed door.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5623)
This simple act, invoking the name of Allah, fortifies the believer in every sphere of life. Ibn al-Qayyim described dhikr as a “spiritual armour” that cannot be pierced unless one forgets to wear it.
7. Stay in a State of Wuḍūʾ
Remaining in a state of purity through wuḍūʾ (ablution) is a shield against unseen harm. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Purity is half of faith.” (Sahih Muslim 223)
When a believer maintains wuḍūʾ, angels accompany him, and Shayṭān finds it difficult to influence him. Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī once said: “The one who dies in a state of wuḍūʾ dies as a guardian of Allah.”
Before sleeping, perform wuḍūʾ as the Prophet ﷺ advised in an authentic narration:
“When you go to bed, perform ablution as you do for prayer, then lie down on your right side and say: ‘O Allah, I submit myself to You, I entrust my affairs to You…’” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6311)
This nightly Sunnah repels nightmares, sleep paralysis, and the whisperings of Shayṭān during sleep.
8. Perform Qiyām al-Layl
The night prayer is a secret between the servant and his Lord. In the stillness of the night, hearts are purified and fortified. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The closest that a servant comes to his Lord is during the last part of the night.”( Sahih Muslim 758)
Qiyām al-Layl not only brings spiritual elevation but weakens the influence of Shayṭān. Ibn Taymiyyah stated that one of the greatest protections against sihr is sincere worship at night, since it renews tawakkul (trust) and breaks the arrogance of Shayṭān.
Allah says:
They arise from their beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and hope. (Sūrah as-Sajdah, 32:16)
9. Remain in the Company of the Believers
Isolation invites weakness. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The wolf eats the sheep that strays from the flock.” (Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 22029)
Staying among righteous Muslims, attending the masjid, engaging in knowledge circles, and maintaining brotherhood, strengthens the heart. Shayṭān preys on loneliness, whispers in secrecy, and feeds on heedlessness. The community acts as a fortress of remembrance and mutual support.
Imām Mālik said, “Knowledge and faith increase in gatherings of remembrance just as iron strengthens through fire.” This companionship keeps the spiritual flame alive.
10. Seek Refuge in Allah from Shayṭān
Finally, the believer must always turn to Allah for protection. The Qur’an teaches us to seek refuge with these words:
فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِSo when you recite the Qur’an, seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shayṭān. (Sūrah an-Naḥl, 16:98)
Whenever anger, temptation, or sudden fear arises, say:
أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِI seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shayṭān.
Shaykh Ibn Bāz رحمه الله explained that these words are a divine command and an immediate protection. Saying them with conviction silences Shayṭān’s whisper and cools the burning of rage, desire, or despair.
Scholarly Reflections on Protection
Imām Ibn al-Qayyim, in Zād al-Ma‘ād, described dhikr as “the fortress of the believer.” He wrote: “Whoever enters it is safe; whoever neglects it is exposed to the enemy.” The remembrance of Allah through recitation, duʿāʾ, and obedience builds invisible fortifications stronger than any material barrier.
Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah added that the real power of ruqyah lies in the purity of the heart and sincerity of the reciter, not merely in the words themselves. He said: “Ruqyah is only as effective as the strength of one’s tawḥīd.”
Thus, the path to protection is not superstition or ritual, but constant connection with the One who protects, al-Ḥafīẓ, the Preserver.
When the Qur’an and Sunnah are recited with certainty, the jinn retreat, the heart finds tranquillity, and Allah’s peace descends upon the believer’s home.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can jinn harm a believer who follows these Sunnah protections?
No harm can touch a believer except by Allah’s decree. Following the Sunnah creates a fortress of divine protection. If harm still occurs, it is a test of patience and purification, not abandonment.
Is it necessary to recite all ten protections daily?
Not all need to be done daily, but consistency in the core adhkār, morning/evening remembrance, Ayatul Kursī, and Surah al-Baqarah, should be prioritised.
Can ruqyah be done by oneself?
Yes. The Prophet ﷺ performed ruqyah for himself and encouraged others to do the same. Self-ruqyah is preferred when recited with firm belief and sincerity.
What are signs of jinn or sihr affliction?
They include unexplained fear, hatred for Qur’an recitation, severe nightmares, or sudden aversion to worship. A qualified scholar should be consulted for proper assessment.
Can listening to Qur’an recordings replace recitation?
Listening is beneficial, but the impact is greatest when recited personally with understanding. The Qur’an is healing when it is lived, not only heard.
Is wearing an amulet (taʿwīdh) allowed?
Amulets containing verses may only be used if written legibly and free from shirk. However, the safest and most authentic method is direct recitation.
What if I forget to say Bismillāh before eating?
Say afterward: “Bismillāhi awwalahu wa ākhirahu” (In the name of Allah, at its beginning and end).
Can these protections help with sleep paralysis?
Yes. Performing wuḍūʾ, reciting Ayatul Kursī, and the last two sūrahs before sleeping repels Shayṭān who causes such disturbances.
Is sihr real, or psychological?
Sihr is real, affirmed in Qur’an (2:102). However, not all distress is due to sihr, spiritual, psychological, and medical aspects should all be considered.
What is the strongest single verse for protection?
Ayatul Kursī is the strongest individual verse, as declared by the Prophet ﷺ. It affirms Allah’s power and preserves the believer from Shayṭān until dawn.
